Love these ponderings - I found sitting with silence really difficult during my Play Therapy training - it felt quite alien. But now I find it really warming to sit with the silence in therapy. In my life outside of the playroom though, I hadn’t realised until reading your article that I actually have always enjoyed silence! From when I was a teen, laying on my bed and staring at the sky through my window (the good old days!), to now doing little tasks in silence and being with my own thoughts. I love listening to podcasts, music, and FaceTiming my people too, so it’s something for me to be curious about my needs in those moments.

Weirdly I find the opposite - if the room/space is silent I end up filling it with annoying thoughts about tasks I need to do. If I have a low level noise in the background (I consider the Real Housewives my colleagues when I WFH) I can somehow focus on what I'm doing, do it well - and think creatively. xx

Love this realisation, Gi. I vowed to create more in 2026, and I realised I have to welcome silence to open myself up to creativity. Hope you can unlock a few moments a day to listen to your own thoughts 💛💭

I love this so much. It’s the reason I run in silence, just the sound of my trainers against the dirt path and my (sometimes) controlled breathing. With two little boys and a busy work life, it’s the only time I get where there’s quiet time to think. I often return bursting with ideas for new creative endeavours!! It also really helps me to map scenes and story outlines. Most people are surprised when I say I run with nothing but it’s so freeing!
